I would be interested to hear from anyone who had an ancestor who fought with the HLI in the 3rd Battle of Gaza in 1917. I have never met anyone  amongst my friends and acqaintances who was even vaguely aware of this part of WW1! (The war to them was all about the trenches in France). My grandfather was just an ordinary man with a wife and two children from Ingram Street in Glasgow - Nathaniel McFarlane - and he died in this battle and is buried in the War Grave Cemetery in Gaza. This part of the war never seems to receive any coverage in film, books or television and it is as if my grandfather and his comrades' deaths were totally unimportant and forgotten. What a senseless waste. He left my Mum without a father and her children including me , without a Grandfather - for what - so 'Jerusalem could be given back for a Christmas present'!!! And that land is still no better off - I can't even visit my g father's grave as it is in the most dangerous place in the world.

I have read information on the three battles in Palestine, but I would love to know more details about where my grandfather along with his fellow soldiers trained, how and when they actually travelled to Gaza (and if he fought in other theatres of war before Palestine).

Dear Ms Fairburn,
I am sorry to read about your Grandfather and his role in the Battle of Gaza. I had an Uncle who served in the HLI and have a photo of his Regiment on Parade in Cairo about 1921. I am also looking for further information about the HLI service in the Middle East. If you have any further info please let me know. I will reciprocate.
