I'm trying to find any information regarding a possible relative who served with the HLI during the Great War. I came across an entry on the CWGC website. As our surname is very uncommon I am wondering if we could be related.

His name is J (John?) Pitbladdo. service no; 43003.

He died on the 18th November 1916 during the assualt on Frankfurt Trench, Beaumont-Hamel, on the Somme and is buried in the Frankfurt Trench Military Cemetery Grave No; C.24. He doesn't appear to be on the "Soldiers Died in the Great War" database.

Any information or links to further searches would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Roy. That site confirmed John was 16th Battalion HLI. Also gave me his wife's name and his home near Kikcaldy.
I wonder how he was in a Glasgow battalion.

I hope this helps, in the book History of the 16 HLI written by Thomas Chalmers, a J. Pitbalo L./Cpl. reg no. 43003 is listed in the 'In Memoriam@ section.

If you don't have the book it is a great insight into the battalion and can be had from Amazon.

Something else I found out is that John was in the Highland Cyclist Battalion at one time. I think when his part of that was disbanded he transfered to the HLI. I'm also pretty sure he was 16th battalion. Would that be the Glasgow Boys Brigade Pals?
