HLI Community

This is the community section of the website where our members can look for friends, tell a story about the HLI, contribute to further research on the Regiment and share family history research.

Please Note

The HLI association does not hold service records, and cannot answer enquiries regarding individual soldiers.  The  Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum www.rhf.org.uk may be able to help or offer advice.  The RHF Museum charge a fee for research but it is quite a modest one. (Currently £20)  Details of archival resources held and further information can be found here: http://rhf.org.uk/rhf/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=80

The views and comments found here are of the online membership and do not necessarily reflect those of the Highland Light Infantry Association.

Hello I am interested in the activities of the HLI in the North Africa campaigns. My father Pvt John Kemp no3313254 joined in 3/4/1939-18/10/1946. He took part in activities in Palestine before war broke out and when egypt was invaded by the Italians they took part in action against them. He was in desert as far as I know for most of the campaigns with a diversion to Syria against Vichy French forces there and also actions against Italians in Abyssinia. He had a cousin peter McLemon who I'm named after he was in 2nd Batt HLI and was killed at Battle of Keren and is buried in Keren War Cemetery. Near the end in Europe my father was in Belgium and attatched to RAMC till end of hostilities. I would like to fill in lots of gaps as where his batt served and how he came to be with another unit at that stage in the war.
