HLI Community

This is the community section of the website where our members can look for friends, tell a story about the HLI, contribute to further research on the Regiment and share family history research.

Please Note

The HLI association does not hold service records, and cannot answer enquiries regarding individual soldiers.  The  Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum may be able to help or offer advice.  The RHF Museum charge a fee for research but it is quite a modest one. (Currently £20)  Details of archival resources held and further information can be found here:

The views and comments found here are of the online membership and do not necessarily reflect those of the Highland Light Infantry Association.

It is organised into four categories:

1. Find a Friend - This section is intended for former serving members to help connect old friends and comrades. For family history research see below. ( go to section )

2. HLI Stories - This section is for personal memories or recollections from those who served with the Regiment or stories from friends and family of those who served. ( go to section )

3. HLI Research - This section is for formal research into the Regiment and is intended to be academic in tone rather than purely personal.          ( go to section )

It is with deep regret that Mr Andrew Bendy has informed us of the death of his Father Clive,

who passed away on the 9th of April 2012.

Clive served with the HLI in Egypt. Clive and his Brother both followed his Father into the HLI.

His Father is Arthur Bendy, the boxing champion who appears in our Family History section.

Andrew has kindly sent this photo of his Father, which he believes was taken in Egypt.

If anyone can confirm the location, or have any memories of Clive,

I am sure Andrew would be delighted to read your comments.

I am trying to find any information on a William Batchelor who was in the 12th Battalion. I have found his medal index card, but that is all. I am in Australia and some of the information is not available online. His regimental/service number was 8000. I am trying to track down his parents/next of kin. Hoping you can help and thanking you in advance Leanne Batchelor Bathurst NSW Australia.

I made this part of the HLI for my dear friend Alastair Dutch OBE.

In memory of his uncle

- Private 14246910, Alastair Hardy -

Died just before the end (2 MAY '45 IN Hohenhorn, killed by a sniper) of WW2

There are several links to see this story:

Link 1 The book, Campaign in Europe. With photo's of the maps.

Link 2 The photos of the HLI monument in France

Link 3 See the trail. Click in the menu on " 10 The Highland Light Infantry. As a part of the 15th Scottish Infantry Division/227th Infantry Brigade.

Link 4 The details know now about the 10 HLI

Link 5 And select the date and city's from the story. You will see who was near the 10 HLI

More photo's will follow from the book

This website is made by me Fred Vogels (Back to Normandy)  Building the story of D-Day.

3rd Battle of Gaza 1917 PDF Print E-mail

I would be interested to hear from anyone who had an ancestor who fought with the HLI in the 3rd Battle of Gaza in 1917. I have never met anyone  amongst my friends and acqaintances who was even vaguely aware of this part of WW1! (The war to them was all about the trenches in France). My grandfather was just an ordinary man with a wife and two children from Ingram Street in Glasgow - Nathaniel McFarlane - and he died in this battle and is buried in the War Grave Cemetery in Gaza. This part of the war never seems to receive any coverage in film, books or television and it is as if my grandfather and his comrades' deaths were totally unimportant and forgotten. What a senseless waste. He left my Mum without a father and her children including me , without a Grandfather - for what - so 'Jerusalem could be given back for a Christmas present'!!! And that land is still no better off - I can't even visit my g father's grave as it is in the most dangerous place in the world.

I have read information on the three battles in Palestine, but I would love to know more details about where my grandfather along with his fellow soldiers trained, how and when they actually travelled to Gaza (and if he fought in other theatres of war before Palestine).
