HLI Community

This is the community section of the website where our members can look for friends, tell a story about the HLI, contribute to further research on the Regiment and share family history research.

Please Note

The HLI association does not hold service records, and cannot answer enquiries regarding individual soldiers.  The  Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum may be able to help or offer advice.  The RHF Museum charge a fee for research but it is quite a modest one. (Currently £20)  Details of archival resources held and further information can be found here:

The views and comments found here are of the online membership and do not necessarily reflect those of the Highland Light Infantry Association.

It is organised into four categories:

1. Find a Friend - This section is intended for former serving members to help connect old friends and comrades. For family history research see below. ( go to section )

2. HLI Stories - This section is for personal memories or recollections from those who served with the Regiment or stories from friends and family of those who served. ( go to section )

3. HLI Research - This section is for formal research into the Regiment and is intended to be academic in tone rather than purely personal.          ( go to section )

4. Family History Research - This section is where members can share family history research. Please keep this section focused on the HLI and associataed Regiments. ( go to section )

5. The Last Post - This section is reserved for 'In Memoriam' notices on recently fallen comerades. ( go to section )

Hello, I have been trying for sometime to locate my late fathers army records.

He enlisted to the HLI in Glasgow om the 5th March 1940 and his army number was 3320947 . During his army service he lost a leg and was invalided out ans discharged at Perth on 26 March 1943. Can anyone show me where I might find some information on his army service. I have no knowledge of where he served, what his duties were or even how he came to have a leg amputated.

Thank you in anticipation

I am doing some research on the service in the HLI of Brigadier Percival DSO & Bar, for a relative.

I understand that the Brigadier spent some time in 6 HLI in NW Europe and would be interested to hear from any old comrade, or from any other members of the Association who have photographs or other information on this gallant gentleman.

Dear All,

On behalf of his Son, I am hoping to trace the Army Career of my Father -in-Law Ernest William Brown.  Ern died in 1975, but often spoke of his time in the Army.  He was born and lived in Consett County Durham, and said that as a teenager he joined the HLI in Durham in the late 1920s.  He often said, he thought he was joining the Durham Light Infantry!!!   He served in India, and left the army in 1935/36 when he married.

The only personal possessions of his time in the Army are the photo's shown below.   One of Ern in uniform, and the other of his Regiment perhaps in India.

Is there someone who can confirm that the uniform is that of the HLI.   It would also be helpful to know if the marching column is thought to be that of the HLI.

Any information would be helpful, including any link where we could find his Army Records.

Thanking you

in anticipation.

Dear Friends,

My father James (Jim) Park served in the HLI from 1950-1956.  He sadly passed away in 1977 when I was 5 years old and I am trying to obtain any information that I can on his time in the HLI.

I would also like to obtain any information I can on my father's good friend in the HLI - his name is David Gray (or Grey).  My mother told me that David was a very good friend of my father's and he married an English woman and moved to Manchester either during service or shortly thereafter.

I also attach a couple of photographs of my father: the first one shows my father sat in the front row, third from right, he is the Corporal.  The second one shows my father firing the Vickers machine gun at the back of the photograph - this photograph was possibly taken in Egypt, Libya, or Cyprus.

If anyone can help me obtain any information on my father it would be greatly appreciated.  My email address is:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thank you and best wishes,

Robert Park
